The idea would be that you could turn the amp up entirely so the power tubes would be breaking up, but have a master volume that overides and controls just the volume. Similar to what Marshall has with the power brake. I don't know if this would interfere with the tone, but I don't see how it would. He may not need this because obviously they are going to play exceptionally loud. I know a lot of the Bassmans are 50 watts so they would be difficult to crank in any normal setting. I'm just looking for a way to push the amp as hard as possible to get overdriven tone and still be able to keep the volume within reason.

I've been using Fender Bassman heads for quite a few years now. I love em. My absolute favorite amp of all time. If you want a classic tone, these are it. Great cleans, great for Rolling Stones style grit. And, as you turn them up they get nasty....right into AC/DC and Social Distortion territory. One of my BF Bassman heads I had tweaked by Billy Zoom, Mikes amp tech, to his exact specs. It's on the Bass channel that's tweaked. Just minor stuff. It is that tone in spades. It does not use a master volume at all.

If volume is a problem, Bassmans won't solve it. They are rediculous loud. You'll need an attenuator or some sort to bring the volume down to managable levels. And, you need to run them into a 4 ohm cab.

Deluxe reverbs are great. Do you have an original or RI?? Either way, they can get you into great SxDx territory if you turn them up. Gotta crank em to get the goods. This is a great little amp for clubs....but still could be really loud for home use. You say it's harsh or shrill?? Have you tried swapping out different types of preamp or power tubes?? And, have it biased properly. Fenders are biased notoriously cold coming from the factory. (BTW..bias is like setting the idle in your car...only for an amp...and it effects the sound).

My Deluxe Reverb is a reissue. I got it probably two weeks ago so I'm still getting accustomed to it. The more I play it the more I like it. It breaks up pretty nicely at around 5. With my pedal I can get a pretty nice distortion at a lower volume. The high end is so bright. That may be why it seems a little shrill to me. If it bothers me down the road I may make some changes. Thanks for the info on the Bassmans. I plan on checking one out in the near future. The ones that I've heard sound awesome. What year are yours? I saw a 64 for a very reasonable price recently. Does it lose any tone running through the attenuator? Can you get a true overdriven sound at a decent volume? Private Hell said that you use the Hot Plate. If I got a bassman I would have to get an attenuator.

I play a Les Paul Standard through a DS-1 pedal and a 1977 Twin Reverb. I still havent been able to tweek the controls to my liking. I recently got rid of my Fender 410 DeVille and bought my twin reverb and I think the Deville sounded better. The DeVille is about as big as I wanna go because I dont want to sacrifice portability. The neverending quest for that perfect tone.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial">Well, I've got a couple. 62, 63 Blondes, and 65, 66 BFs. The Blondes are a little different circuit. Mike used Blondes over the years as well as BFs. They sound a little different. Yeah, you would need an attenuator to get the goods, unless you want you neighbors ticked off at you all the time. The are LOUD!!! I use an attenuator with them at the clubs we play at (granted, I'm runnning into a 4x12 cab). Yeah, if you're talking television volume levels...a Hot Plate will suck some of the tone away....but it's managable with some eq tweaks on the amp. But, at stage volume, not even an issue.

Hope that helps a little more.
